In consequence of the revolt of
Mahesh Bhupati and Rohan Bopanna against the All India Tennis Association by refusing
to become doubles partner of Leander Paes in London Olympic, 2012, the topmost
body of tennis in India decided to keep them out of India team till June, 2014.
Bharat Oza, the secretary-general of AITA said at a press conference on Sunday,
"AITA is
not in a position to
impose ban on any player. It's a kind of disciplinary action to send across a message to players, who aspire to play for India that we will not tolerate
this,"…. "It is further decided not
to consider Mahesh Bhupati and Rohan Bopanna for selection to play for India
till June 30, 2014."not in a position to
impose ban on any player. It's a kind of disciplinary action to send across a message to players, who aspire to play for India that we will not tolerate
Both Bhupati and Bopanna are the top
tennis players of India. Bhupati has been awarded with “Padmashri”. The decision
was quite expected. They put their personal ego and interest before the interest
of the nation for London Olympic and AITA was forced to send two Doubles Teams
to the Olympic. Though an international tennis player in India bothers least about
the ban of AITA as it does not restrict them from playing ATP tournaments and
earn money, had AITA no taken this step the junior players might have got a
wrong signal.
