Mary Kom, the Boxer, and Olympic, 2016

The title of this post may create confusion, but there is no error in it. Yes, I am talking about Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom and the Olympic to be held in ‘Rio de Janeiro’ from 5th August 2016 to 21st August 2016.  As published in different media Mary Kom herself aspires to participate in the Rio Olympic and win a medal for India. If it happens that will be a grand event and proper justification of her name, ‘Magnificent Mary’. But let us consider the odds Mary has to face.

No Indian sports person except wrestler Sushil Kumar could ever retain his or her success in successive Olympics. But this is of not much importance because the number of sports persons of India successful in Olympics has reached two digits this year.

What is most important is keeping ones performance at the apex level for over four years and it is very difficult. Mary is now 29 and on the next Olympic she will be 32. I am not saying that it is impossible for a boxer to win in Olympic but it is not the golden age.

In India very few take interest at the grooming level of sports and games. Many athletes could not even continue their sports carrier due to want of proper help or sponsorship. But if someone wins a success there will be lot of people to make fuss, the media, the politicians, the Government even the film makers; everyone wants to capitalize the success. It is obvious as success is a rare event here, but for these there is a chance that the successful sports person may lose his or her focus; and it happens.

The last but not the least, Women boxing has been introduced in Olympic this year. There has been much less number of competitor in London. Not all the weight categories of boxing could be introduced. The countries who win bag-full of medals did not give much emphasis on this event. The scenario will quite contrary in Rio. The competition will be tougher than London.

If you are to be called great you have to overcome several odds. Mary Kom did that in her life so long.

Go! Mary Kom, Go!
